d. Clean the quench with particular attention to the air ducts. 

They should be free of dust and debris, which can be blown onto the glass surface or that could be blown back into the furnace chamber at time of quenching. 

Also be certain that there is no glass dust or glass shards stuck in the rope-covered rolls. During major maintenance service, installing new rope on the quench rolls will rule out another common source of glass defects, scratching and imprinting from glass impregnated quench rolls.

e. Check the S02 lines and application of S02 gas. 

Check the S02 lines to be certain that they are clean and free of any build up or debris. The gas lines should be replaced with stainless steel if necessary.


The use and application of S02 gas should be approached and managed with care. If the glass tempering furnace manufacturer recommends the use of S02 gas, anhydrous grade S02 is recommended over commercial grade S02. Many factors influence the effectiveness of the S02, and the formation of a Sodium Sulfate (Na2SO4) barrier coating on the glass.  Sodium Sulfate may form in a metastable Na2SO7 phase, which under 400°C is present at the glass surface in liquid phase.  Na2SO7 is sticky and may form nodules.  The furnace temperature, S02 gas concentration, and dew point in the furnace all play a role in sodium sulfate nodule formation.  (to be continued)
