The Ways to Dispose of Spontaneous Explosion of Tempered Glass

In recent years, accidents of spontaneous explosion of tempered glass were reported every now and then domestic and overseas. Many walkers on the road were injured by the falling glass fragments after spontaneous explosion. The statistics show that the spontaneous explosion of tempered glass mainly results from the nickel sulfide concretion existing in the raw glass sheet. Usually the homogenization treatment of tempered glass and the reduction of partial stress centralization due to concretion may effectively reduce the harms caused by the spontaneous explosion of tempered glass. 

Homogenization treatment can be done through using the homogenizing furnace with convection heating. It enables each sheet of glass to be heated uniformly by air circulation. Even if the glass is damaged, the air current will not be obstructed. The air current in the furnace shall be parallel to the glass surface. The design of air inlet and outlet shall ensure that the glass fragments will not obstruct it. It's better that the glass shall be placed vertically. Moreover, the glass shall not be fixed completely to ensure the glass can expand freely. In the meantime, glass shall be separated in a mode which will not affect the air flow. The spacer shall not obstruct the air flow. The recommended glass spacing is 20mm. 

The homogenization treatment process includes three stages, namely heating, holding and cooling. 

1.1 Heating stage 

The heating stage starts after all the glass is charged into the homogenizing furnace and ends when the last sheet of glass reaches the temperature of 280 degree, and the duration to reach this temperature shall be determined in the verification procedure. The time depends on the size of homogenizing furnace, quantity of glass processed, spacing of glass and heating capacity of heating system. What should be noticed are that the spacing of glass and the heating rate shall be controlled, so as to minimize the possibility of glass breaking due to heat stress.

In order to promote the effective heating, the air temperature in the furnace may reach 320 degree. However, the instant temperature on glass surface shall not exceed 300 degree, in case of stress relaxation of tempered glass. 

1.2 Holding stage 

The holding stage starts when all the glass surface temperature reaches 280 degree, and the holding time shall be 2 hours. The temperature control scope in the holding stage shall be around 290 degree. In order to ensure that the glass surface temperature is always within the specified scope in the whole holding stage, the homogenizing furnace shall be precisely controlled. 

1.3 Cooling stage 
After the holding stage ends, the glass starts cooling. At this stage, the glass shall be cooled till ambient temperature, or ends when the air temperature in the furnace reaches 70 degree. The cooling rate shall be controlled, so as to minimize the possibility of glass breaking due to heat stress.

To prevent the spontaneous explosion caused by nickel sulfide in the tempered glass, purchasing the high-quality float glass raw sheet or removing the float glass raw sheet with nickel sulfide concretion can also avoid the spontaneous explosion of tempered glass.
