Edge Stress Analysis and Control of Automobile Tempered Glass (1)

Introduction:
Tempered glass is a kind of safety glass after tempered by glass tempering furnace, and it's used in automobile a lot. While, under the influence of complicated stress resulted from bending and heating processes of automobile tempered glass, tensile stress extends near glass edges, which may cause tempered glass breaking in the future use if not controlled. Over high edge tensile stress of automobile tempered glass is one of the reasons of glass spontaneous breaking. In order to ensure product quality and avoid breaking in the use, edge stress must be strictly controlled in the production of automobile tempered glass. We can use edge stress meter to measure tensile stresses at some peripheral points and control them within a proper range so as to greatly reduce the percentage of spontaneous breaking of tempered glass.    

Spontaneous breaking means that the tempered glass breaks without being exerted any direct mechanical external force, which is a kind of post-production breaking without any signs. Spontaneous breaking is a quality defect of tempered glass with awful consequence, which may weaken users' confidence in product quality and thus severely influences product quality and reputation of tempered products. Therefore, how to reduce the percentage of spontaneous breaking of tempered glass becomes a puzzle for every enterprise of glass deep processing. After a long time of research and analysis, we got the following main reasons of spontaneous breaking of tempered glass:

1. Surface compressive stress of tempered glass is over high or unevenly distributed;
2. The difference between degree of coincidence/sphere/flouncing of tempered glass and inspection pattern or standard is great, which results in high local stress of glass after assembly;
3. Quality defects happen to glass during the processing, e.g. serious scratch, nick and deep chip and etc;  
4. Stones in raw sheet;
5. Over high edge tensile stress after glass tempered. (to be continued)
