Iridescence of Tempered Glass and its Solutions

Most of tempered glass is made from float glass. In the production and forming processes of float glass, the metal tin forms tin oxide (SnO) upon oxidation. The tin oxide diffuses into the glass surface contacting liquid tin. During the tempering, when temperature of the glass tempering furnace exceeds 600 centigrade, tin oxide in the glass surface will be further oxidized as tin dioxide (SnO2), then the volume expands and extrudes the glass to form micro waviness. Light interference will occur under the sunshine, and rainbow in which blue color predominates or foggy film will appear. This is called the iridescence. The quantity and depth of SnO penetration into the glass surface are inversely proportional. About 60% of SnO is concentrated in the film in thickness of 3um or so in the glass surface. 

1) Choose high-quality glass sheet. 
2) Let the surface with tin face up so as to reduce the occurrence of iridescence. 
3) Polish the glass with fine polishing powder.
